What to see in Riccione and among the Medieval Villages of Valmarecchia

Combine a leisurely stroll with eyes turned upwards and a thousand legends waiting to be discovered. The result? A perfect day exploring Riccione and its surroundings. Here’s what to see:

  • Gradara (approximately 15 km away)

The castle was the setting for the legendary love story of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, narrated by Dante Alighieri. Every July, there’s the Siege of the Castle!

  • Verucchio (approximately 26 km away)

The fortress often hosts art exhibitions and is one of the largest and best-preserved among the Malatesta. Every July, the Verucchio Festival takes place with concerts under the stars and events.

  • Torriana and Montebello (approximately 30 km away)

The Malatesta castles of Torriana and Montebello stand facing each other on two rocky spurs. Legend has it that Gianciotto Malatesta was killed here, so don’t miss them!

The Montebello Castle is still visitable, especially known for the legend of Azzurrina, a ghostly child said to wander the walls at night.

  • Montescudo and Mondaino

The former is a village contested between Montefeltro and Malatesta, offering a splendid panoramic view of the valley all the way to the sea. Mondaino hosts the famous Palio del Daino, a historical reenactment in costume held in early August. The castle houses the Paleontological Museum.

  • San Leo (approximately 41 km away)

The castle dominates the landscape from the top of a rocky spur, once imprisoning famous personalities like the alchemist Count of Cagliostro and some protagonists of the Risorgimento. Today, it’s a marvelous museum. Every August, the Alchemy-Alchemies festival pays homage to the Count of Cagliostro: an event uncovering legends and myths from ancient times.

  • San Marino (approximately 27 km away)

The world’s smallest republic is distinguishable from afar by its three imposing castles. The medieval village is picturesque and offers a splendid view.

Don’t miss, in July, the “Medieval Days”: jesters, music, dances, and numerous shows enliven the castles of San Marino for 4 amazing days.

Other must-visit destinations: Montegridolfo, Santarcangelo di Romagna, Torriana, and Urbino.
